Ginkgo Biloba
The curative powers of Ginkgo have been known since antiquity. Gingko seeds, and less commonly the Gingko leaves, are mentioned in many famous medical treatises. The first written record of Ginkgo use comes from the Dian Nan Bencao, a 3,500 year-old Chinese text. In addition to being a core part of traditional Chinese medicine, Ginkgo was also a key ingredient in Soma, an ancient Hindu curative. Some of the traditional uses of the Ginkgo preparations include the treatment of circulatory problems, memory problems, dementia, tinnitus, headaches, eczema and leg cramps.
Ginkgo contains a large number of bioflavonoid compounds with proven ability to neutralise free radicals. Ginkgo extract has been used extensively in Europe for dementia, and was recently formally approved for this use in Germany. Ginkgo is the fifth most popular prescription medicine in Germany.
A recent World Health Organization review of Ginkgos efficacy in tackling dementia (Monographs on selected medicinal plants: Folio Ginkgo) noted that: ''In clinical studies G. Biloba has effectively managed symptoms of cerebral insufficiency, including difficulty in concentration and memory, absent-mindedness, confusion...''.
The authoratitive German Monograph on Ginkgo Biloba concludes that ''Ginkgo extracts appear to be capable of stabilising and, in some cases, improving the cognitive performance and the social functioning of patients with dementia [Alzheimer's Disease/senile dementia].'' This same treatise concludes also that: ''Administration of Ginkgo Biloba extracts has been shown to improve a variety of conditions associated with cerebral insufficiency, including visual field disturbances associated with chronic lack of blood flow, oculomotor and complex choice reaction, vigilance and reaction times, depressive mood, memory and mental performance, dizziness, and decreased blood flow.''
The American Geriatric Society, in their public education section, states that: ''Ginkgo Biloba, a plant extract, may also help people affected by Alzheimer's disease.''
NOTE: persons taking blood-thinning drugs, including daily aspirin, should not take Ginkgo without consulting a healthcare professional. Those taking regular over-the-counter painkillers should consult a healthcare professional before taking Ginkgo.
